US President Donald Trump said he was "very disappointed" with Russian President Vladimir Putin for failing to deliver progress on a peace deal for Ukraine, just days before a self-imposed deadline expires.

'We had a great relationship'

Speaking on the Scott Jennings Radio Show , Trump recalled his Alaska summit with Putin earlier this month, where he set a two-week deadline for Moscow to reach an agreement. That deadline is due to run out later this week.

"I'm very disappointed in President Putin, I can say that," Trump said. "We had a great relationship, I'm very disappointed."

He stopped short of outlining what consequences, if any, Russia could face should talks collapse.

Russia–China ties dismissed

Putin met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Tuesday, where the two leaders underscored growing defense cooperation ahead of a major military parade. Asked about a potential Russia–China axis, Trump dismissed the prospect of any threat.

"I'm not concerned at all, no," Trump said. "We have the strongest military in the world by far and they would never use their military on us, believe me that would be the worst thing they could ever do."

The White House has yet to clarify what next steps the US will take if Moscow fails to meet Trump’s peace deal deadline.
