The USCIS has revealed that 120,141 H-1B visa applications have been selected for 2026 which is the lowest since 2021, owing to several issues, including H-1B cap, increased fee etc. But MAGA supporters freaked out over the 'huge' number of H-1B approvals and contended that US jobs are still being stolen.
"US workers are being replaced. 120,000 H-1B visas have been approved for 2026. Not good," Laura Loomer posted.
Donald Trump -aide Loomer was at the forefront of the H-1B row that divided MAGA into two camps: one camp was led by Elon Musk, David Sacks, Vivek Ramaswamy who wanted to increase the H-1B quota, and the other one had Trump's former adviser Steve Bannon, Laura Loomer who wanted fewer people to come to the US on H-1B and American people getting those jobs instead.
H-1B number for 2026 explained
USCIS received 358,737 H-1B registrations, of which 343,981 were deemed eligible. This represents a 27% drop in eligible registrations from the 470,342 reported for FY 2025. The H-1B program operates under an annual cap of 65,000 new visas. However, an additional 20,000 petitions are exempt from this limit for applicants who hold a U.S. master's degree or higher, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
'The number of H-1Bs we need this year is ZERO'
Steve Bannon said the number of visa approvals is outrageous. In a time of mass layoffs coupled with the advent of AI, they approved an outrageous number of H-1B visas, Steve Bannon said. The number of H-1Bs we need this year is ZERO. "Everyone issued one should go home, and every billet should be filled by an American," Steve Bannon said.
Industries such as technology, finance, and academia remain some of the largest beneficiaries of the H-1B visa program. In 2024, leading firms like Amazon, Google, and Meta were granted thousands of H-1B visas. Elon Musk's Tesla also used the program to bring hundreds of skilled workers to the United States.
"H-1B visa numbers for FY 2026: Despite mass tech layoffs and voter backlash—especially after the Christmas H-1B uproar—the Trump team stays hands-off: 120,141 NEW H-1Bs selected for FY2026. Demand remains high despite layoffs—a clear sign US workers are being replaced," X handle of US Tech Workers posted.
