NEW DELHI: Amid uproar over US President Donald Trump mediating talks between India and Pakistan, Congress leader Pawan Khera on Monday took a jibe and asked him for an update on captive BSF jawan Purnam Sahu .

Tagging Trump in his X post, Khera asked, "When will our BSF jawan Purnam Sahu be released from Pakistani captivity?"

His statement comes amid opposition's objection to Trump's mediation in ceasefire talks between India and Pakistan.

The BSF trooper was detained by Pakistan Rangers on April 23 after he inadvertently crossed the International Border near Punjab's Firozpur . According to reports, Sahu unintentionally stepped into Pakistani territory.

Earlier, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed concern over Sahu's return, adding that Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee is in touch with his family members.

She said, "This is an extremely sad situation. His name is Sahu. Our party's Kalyan Banerjee is in touch with the family members. I want that he should be rescued as soon as possible. We have clearly said that our party is with the government on the issues of internal and external security. We are not doing divide and rule here."

An officer told that jawans were asked to be extra cautious amid ongoing tension and "avoid inadvertently crossing the border during patrol duty." "Even the farmers working on farms at the borders have been asked to be vigilant," the officer added.

"Pakistan is not responding because of ongoing tension after the Pahalgam attack, but we have lodged our protest with the Pak Rangers and are making all efforts to bring back the jawan," the officer said.
