The first NHL shootout took place on October 5, 2005, in Toronto, Ontario. The Toronto Maple Leafs faced the Ottawa Senators after the game was tied following overtime. Daniel Alfredsson scored for Ottawa, and Dany Heatley added a second goal. Toronto’s Jason Allison and Eric Lindros missed, giving goaltender Dominik Hasek and the Senators the victory. The shootout replaced ties in regular-season games. Over time, 2,486 games have gone to a shootout. Its frequency has decreased since 3-on-3 overtime began in 2015.
Longest NHL shootout featuring Alex Ovechkin, Jussi Jokinen
The longest shootout in NHL history occurred on December 16, 2014. The Washington Capitals played the Florida Panthers in Sunrise, Florida. It lasted 20 rounds. Alex Ovechkin scored for the Capitals, and Jussi Jokinen kept the Panthers in contention. Both teams used all 18 skaters before repeating shooters. Nicklas Backstrom and Nick Bjugstad had second chances. Bjugstad finally scored to end the game, which lasted over three hours. The previous record of 15 rounds was set by the New York Rangers against the Capitals in 2005.

Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks leads all skaters with 53 shootout goals in 132 attempts. Jonathan Toews, also with the Blackhawks, has 52 goals. T.J. Oshie of the St. Louis Blues and Frans Nielsen of the New York Islanders have 49 each. Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, formerly of the Pittsburgh Penguins and now with the Minnesota Wild, leads with 66 shootout wins. Henrik Lundqvist and Ryan Miller follow with 61 and 60 victories. Active goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning has a .773 save percentage, the best among current netminders with 30 or more shootouts.
