The Perfect Neighbor's Susan Lorincz sentencing explained

Netflix viewers have been left horrified by filmmaker Geeta Gandbhir's new documentary The Perfect Neighbour, which portrays "an American tragedy" that occurred in Ocala, Florida. The disturbing film recounts the harrowing true story of a white Florida woman who murdered a black mother of four.

Susan Lorincz, aged 60, fatally shot her neighbour, the late Ajike 'AJ' Owens, back in 2023. In the new Netflix documentary, viewers witness how the shocking events unfolded through bodycam footage, videos captured via ringcam and phone, recorded 911 calls and clips from the interrogation room.

Whilst viewers have been left devastated for Owens and her family, they are also left questioning what became of Susan Lorincz following the shooting.

The eerie summary from Netflix states: "She was no stranger to police, routinely calling 911 on kids playing nearby. An American tragedy unfolds through bodycam and interrogation room footage."

Susan Lorincz is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence after being found guilty of manslaughter with a firearm in 2024.

Lorincz fatally shot Ajike Owens through her own front door after her neighbour came knocking following a reported dispute over the victim's children playing outside.

A jury convicted Lorincz of one count of manslaughter with a firearm and one count of assault in August 2024.

The BBC reported that, according to claims from Owens' family and an affidavit, Lorincz had allegedly hurled racial slurs at Owens' children prior to the shooting on 2 June 2023.

In court, Lorincz refuted the accusations of using racial slurs towards Owens' children and insisted the shooting was "not about race".

She expressed: "I am so sorry that I took AJ's life. I never intended to kill her.

"The night I shot that gun I was confused as to why she was screaming and pounding on my door. Please accept my humble and sincere apology for this tragedy."

The Netflix documentary The Perfect Neighbour delves into Florida's controversial 'Stand Your Ground' law from 2005, which permits individuals to use reasonable force - including lethal force - to prevent death or bodily harm.
