
An English tourist is in a critical condition after a serious assault in Temple Bar in Dublin. Emergency services attended the scene of the incident in the Temple Bar Square area at around 12.30am on Thursday.
A man aged in his 40s, understood to be an English tourist, was taken to Beaumont Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition. A garda spokesman said: "Gardai in Pearse Street are appealing for witnesses in relation to a serious assault that occurred in the Temple Bar Square area of Dublin 2 in the early hours of this morning, Thursday 21st August 2025. Gardai and emergency services responded to the incident at approximately 12.30am.
"The scene was preserved, and a technical examination has been completed."
The man is believed to have sustained serious head injuries after being knocked to the ground in a one-strike attack, having been in a verbal altercation with another male.
Ireland's Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan said: "I have been briefed on a serious incident that occurred overnight in Dublin. While a garda investigation is under way, I will not comment further but I want to wish the injured man a full recovery and appeal for any witnesses to come forward to assist An Garda Siochana."
Gardai are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have information about the incident to get in contact.
They are also appealing to anyone with video footage relevant to the investigation to contact Pearse Street Garda Station on (01)666 9000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
