Eggs will stay fresh for 'several weeks' if stored in one place

The question of where to store eggs has sparked debate for years. While some argue that keeping them in the fridge is the best way to preserve freshness, others believe that storing eggs in a cupboard, drawer, or simply on the kitchen counter helps them stay fresh even longer.

Now, food experts have shared where they believe it's more beneficial to store eggs, a storage tip that can make them last for weeks. If eggs are chilled before purchase, the change in temperature as they move from the cold fridge to a warmer trolley can cause condensation to form.

When these eggs are then placed back into a fridge at home, the moisture encourages bacterial growth on the shell, which can compromise their safety. Keeping eggs at a consistent temperature helps prevent this issue. As in the UK eggs are normally kept on shelves rather than refrigerated, Brits are unlikely to run into this risk.

Foodies at Modern Milkman said the optimal storage place for eggs once bought is, in fact, the fridge. Eggs can last for up to three to four weeks in the fridge before they begin to perish, reportsthe Mirror. But while kept in the fridge, it also helps eggs preserve their freshness if they remain in their original packaging, according to an expert.

The experts stated: "The storing of eggs in your fridge in their original packaging is the best way of keeping them extra fresh. This will keep them at a consistent temperature, staving off spoilage and slowing bacterial growth.

"A temperature of 4C or lower will ensure your eggs stay fresh and delicious. And keeping eggs in their original packaging will protect their pores from being infiltrated by their new, perhaps stronger-smelling neighbours in the fridge."

Storing eggs in their original packaging is useful because it keeps the use-by date visible, helping you track freshness.

Experts recommend placing them on a shelf inside the fridge instead of the door, as the temperature there is more stable and better for preserving eggs.

They said: "While many people prefer to have them in an easily and quickly accessible spot on the door, the temperature of this area fluctuates as you delve in and out of your fridge throughout the day."

If you have separated your eggs, you can still store them safely. Beat the yolk and keep it in an airtight container in the fridge-it will stay fresh for up to three days. Egg whites should also go in a sealed container or bag in the fridge and will last about two days. If they haven't been frozen before, you can freeze egg whites for up to three months.
