A home cook has shared the one ingredient she includes in her baked beans that makes all the difference. Baked beans are a staple tinned food that is found in many British cupboards. They are so easy to make and usually count as one of your five a day. Plus, they are cheap to buy in supermarkets across the country. While they are delicious on their own, there are many ways to spice up your baked beans.
One of those ways, says one foodie and home cook, is to add Dijon mustard. This ingredient is known for its strong flavour, so you might not have considered adding it to your baked beans before. However, this expert says that it is the ingredient that really makes her baked beans pop. Jessica Merchant, who runs the recipe site How Sweet Eats, shared her baked beans recipe that is easy to make and delicious once it is finished.
With a number of other ingredients, she makes a "delicious" baked beans dish that she says taste amazing every time. Here are the ingredients she uses:
- 2 sliced bacon, diced
- 1 small sweet onion, diced
- 1 bell pepper, diced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
- 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon chipotle chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons BBQ sauce
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 2 cans baked bean
- 2 slices bacon, for topping
To make her baked beans, she first preheats her oven to around 200C. While that preheats, she cooks bacon in a skillet until it has browned. She then stirs in onion, pepper and garlic, stirring regularly.
After that, she the paprika, chili powder, salt and pepper and cooks for a minute before adding vinegar, BBQ sauce, ketchup, mustard and brown sugar until combined.
Then, stir in the baked beans, brings the mixture to a boil and turns off the heat. She says: "I suggest tasting the beans here and adding more salt, pepper or heat if desired. If you'd like, you can lay a few strips of bacon on top of the beans here too."
Finally, she places the skillet in the oven for between 30 and 35 minutes. Remove it and let it cool before serving.
