ITV Grace viewers issue same complaint just minutes into final episode of series

Viewers of hit crime series Grace have issued the same complaints minutes into the series finale.

John Simm was back as DS Roy Grace, the character which originates from the series of books written by author Peter James. In the season five finale, a high-stakes criminal trial of a ruthless Brighton drug lord and a puzzling double murder investigation pushed Grace's team to the very brink.

The final episode of the current series aired on ITV1 on Sunday (April 27) but it didn't take long for viewers to get distracted. It seemed plenty of them had an issue with the realism of the show.

In the earlier scenes, Grace along with his partner, helped officers from border patrol after a van driver was halted hauling a classic car coming into the UK. They tried to tell him that they had found nothing suspicious about it after searching inside and out but the detective was not convinced.

He claimed that the car was way over the weight of what that type is supposed to be. He then asked for a pen knife before cutting apart the spare tyre at the back of the vehicle. Inside he found a stash of drugs that everyone else somehow missed. That kicked off a criminal trial that was the focus of the rest of the episode.

Viewers watching along at home were quick to react and took to social media to share their thoughts. One person posted: "Border Force stop smuggler at port but don't find hidden drugs until Grace weighs the car - and then let the smuggler run off. The obsession with illegal immigrants must have lowered standards at that port."

Another added: "There is one point that everyone has overlooked... They went into the trailer with a search dog, why didn't it detect and indicate the presence of the drugs?"

Some else claimed: "Obviously I have no direct experience but I’m not convinced that a tyre full of drugs would put a 1600kg car “well over its usual weight.”

It wasn't the only time viewers had an issue with events in the episode that pulled them out of the story. There were also problems during the trial itself. At one point Grace spoke to a juror outside court but one fan noted: "A DC or a PC knows not to speak to a juror let alone a Detective Superintendent."

It was also pointed out that the jury's constant deliberation before the prosecution and defence had presented their case didn't ring true either. As someone said: "Hmmm... the jury doesn't have to elect a foreperson until they start deliberating?!" Someone else asked: "Why is the Judge threatening people in the court?"

One person quipped "so now the detective is allowed to become the barrister" as Grace suddenly revealed new evidence and a different suspect later in the trial, which almost certainly wouldn't hold up in a new court.

There were also moments that fans started to believe they were watching Line of Duty rather than Grace. At multiple times there was the suggestion of dodgy police and corruption.

One fan shared: "Don't say a person newly joined CID has criminals in her family that nobody knew about." Another asked: "Anyone else not trusted the new copper since she started?" While another posted: "Grace is getting all Line of Duty, in a good way though."

Episodes for series five have in turn taken inspiration from four books: Dead If You Don't, Dead At First Sight, Need You Dead, with the finale retelling the tale in Find Them Dead. Each have been feature length episodes lasting around two hours. A sixth series is set to enter production soon.
