Inside £6.35m nuclear war bunker that doubles as extravagant party mansion

When thinking aboutnuclearbunkers, the words glitz and glamour don't immediately spring to mind. But this striking underground home in the party city of Las Vegas may well change your perspective.

Located minutes away from Sin City's iconic strip, with its opulent gambling empires and palatial nightclubs, the hardy shelter dates back to the dark days of the Cold War, when fears over potential nuclear warfare reached fever pitch.

While many worried Americans built bunkers during these uncertain years, it's unlikely you'll have seen anything quite like this $8.5 million (£6.35m) hideaway, which is regarded as one of the most unusual properties in the US.

This unique and rather bizarre bunker was first constructed in the 1970s, at the very height of tensions between America and the now dissolved Soviet Union (USSR), and combines practicality with opulence.

Known as the Las Vegas Underground House, this is the world's largest "Atomitat" - an abbreviation of atomic habitat - and was once advertised as a stylish way to sit out the horrors of a potential Armageddon.

As well as plenty of underground space, the owner of this sprawling estate can also enjoy a second home above ground, which conceals the extraordinary secret shelter.

This spacious property boasts plenty of the sort of luxury those familiar with Las Vegas life might expect. It has five bedrooms, six bathrooms, and more than 14,000 sq. ft. of living space.

While survival is the key element of any bunker worth its salt, this one is also very comfortable, and its inhabitants are unlikely to want entertainment.

Below ground, residents can while away any catastrophes with a dip in the swimming pool or a wander on the putting green, Luxury Property News reports.

For those who love to party in true Las Vegas spirit, there's also a dance floor, bar, various saunas and even a fake sky, built to imitate a full day/night cycle.

Fans of '70s style design will enjoy the untouched retro interiors, completed with hand-painted murals, sculpted trees and time-capsule decor.

At first glance, the one-of-a-kind property gives the feel of rolling back the decades, with a somewhat eerie effect.

As suggested by listing agent Holly Erker of IS Luxury, this home could well serve as a museum, filming location, event venue or private retreat, depending on the owner's preference.
