BREAKING: Alexander Isak completes record-breaking Liverpool transfer after Newcastle saga

Send Push

Liverpool have finally ended the transfer saga of the summer by landing Alexander Isak, who will wear the No.9 shirt at Anfield.

The Reds have brokered a British record £125m deal to land striker Isak from Newcastle. But despite a deal sheet being submitted with the Premier League a £35m move for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi collapsed at the 11th hour.

Palace pulled the plug on Guehi’s move despite the defender undergoing a medical in London after their defensive target Igor Julio opted to join West Ham on loan from Brighton. Guehi, 25, had showdown talks with Palace boss Oliver Glasner who was desperate to keep him and the club eventually decided to hold onto the player.

The England international has just one year left on his contract and can move for free next summer but is disappointed the dream move fell apart. Isak finally got his wish though when Liverpool agreed a deal with Newcastle on Sunday night after the Magpies opened the door to negotiations.

Isak, 25, has signed a six-year deal at Anfield after a summer saga which saw the Sweden forward go on strike to force a move away from St James’ Park.

Newcastle relented when he informed them last week that he would not accept more money or a clause inserted into his deal to allow him to leave next summer for a set fee.

The Magpies signed Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart for a club record £65m and Yoane Wissa from Brentford for £55m to replace Isak and Callum Wilson.

Liverpool have spent £455.5m this summer on new recruits in a record-breaking transfer window for English clubs.

Their £116m move for Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen has already been beaten by Isak while they also signed forward Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79m.

Liverpool replenished their full back options with the signings of Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong at a combined £75m while keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili completed his £29m move from Valencia that was agreed last summer.

The Reds missed out on Guehi but they did spend £30m on highly-rated teenage centre-back Giovanni Leoni, who is behind Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez in the defensive pecking order.

Brighton, AC Milan, and Crystal Palace were interested in Gomez this summer but the Reds kept him in case the Guehi deal broke down.
