Unprovoked gunfire rang out again along the fragile India-Pakistan frontier. According to the Indian Army, Pakistan initiated small-arms fire during the night of 29-30 April across multiple sectors of Jammu & Kashmir.
"During the night of 29-30 April, Pakistan Army posts initiated unprovoked small-arms fire across the Line of Control opposite the Naushera, Sunderbani and Akhnoor sectors in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. Indian Army troops responded swiftly and proportionately," the Indian Army said in a statement.
The ceasefire violation wasn’t limited to just those three sectors.
Further aggression was reported from Pakistan Army posts near the Line of Control in Baramulla and Kupwara districts. Small-arms fire was also reported across the International Border in the Pargwal Sector.
"Further to the previous update about 29-30 April (Night), unprovoked small arms firing by the Pakistan Army was also reported from their posts across the Line of Control in Baramulla and Kupwara districts, as well as across the International Border in the Pargwal Sector. Indian Army troops responded appropriately," the Indian Army confirmed.
Escalating tensions post-Pahalgam attack
This renewed border hostility follows the devastating 22 April terror attack in Pahalgam, which left 26 people dead—most of them tourists. The attack triggered a nationwide outcry, with security agencies placed on high alert.
Sources said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given the military a free hand in its response. There are no constraints on the choice of targets, timing, or tactics.
In a high-level meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and the three service chiefs, Modi expressed “full faith and confidence in the armed forces” and greenlit further action.
“Will hunt down the terrorists”
Following the attack, Modi had vowed to bring the perpetrators and their backers to justice. Officials now say that this cross-border fire may be linked to Pakistan's attempts to distract from its involvement or escalate tensions in the region.
The situation remains tense, with the Indian Army on high alert along both the Line of Control and the International Border.
