A tragic incident unfolded in Mallewal village on the night of July 23, where a man allegedly killed his son following an argument over a pedestal fan, leaving one of his grandsons orphaned on his birthday.
According to police reports, 65-year-old Malkeet Singh attacked his son, Jagpal Singh (35), with a sharp farming tool, causing fatal head injuries. The confrontation reportedly began after the family had gathered to celebrate the birthday of Jagpal’s son. The dispute started when Jagpal expressed concern about the pedestal fan lacking a protective mesh and asked his father to turn it off, fearing a child might get hurt. Though tensions flared, both father and son later retired to their rooms.
Later that night, police said Malkeet, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, entered Jagpal’s room while he was asleep and struck him three times on the head with a sickle-like tool. Jagpal, who had two sons aged 5 and 2, was rushed to the civil hospital in Nabha and then referred to PGIMER, Chandigarh. He succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Bhadson police station SHO Gurpreet Singh confirmed a murder case has been registered against Malkeet Singh based on family statements. “The incident took place on July 23 night. A day before murder, arguments took place between the duo, but they were pacified by the neighbours and family members. Jagpal was the only son of Malkeet. He is survived by two sons and his wife. An investigation is underway,” said the SHO.
Jagpal’s mother, devastated by the incident, said her husband had "destroyed their family with his own hands." A relative, Beant Singh, condemned the act, calling it “shameful and inexcusable.”
